YouTube is my #1 place to go when I need workout ideas, tips, or inspiration. There are so many great channels, all with something unique to offer. Here’s a rundown on my favorite YouTube channels, and why I like them so much.
The What: FitnessBlender is a husband and wife team (Kelli and Daniel) who have created hundreds of free workouts that are available on their website and on YouTube. They also offer lots of great workout and healthy eating tips which help make healthy living fun instead of a chore. Check out their website: https://www.fitnessblender.com/
The Why: I’ve never seen so much variety on a fitness channel – they have workouts that range from five minutes to over an hour in length, and routines for every level of fitness, not to mention the broad range of workout types (pilates, barre, HIIT, weight training, bodyweight only, etc.). If you know me, you know one of the things I stress as being the most important when it comes to fitness is variety. Doing the same thing over and over creates opportunity not only for boredom, but also to injury. If you follow FitnessBlender’s workouts, you will never be bored, and you certainly won’t be lacking when it comes to variety.
My Experience: FitnessBlender was one of the first fitness programs that got me hooked on exercise. I had been doing some working out prior to finding FB, but I hadn’t made any real progress, and I didn’t really know what I was doing. After doing FB for just a couple of weeks I had made noticeable gains in my fitness – both in how I felt in my body and in what I could do. In a matter of weeks I became familiar with dozens of different exercises, and learned what fitness is really about (function, not looks). But most of all, I set goals, reached them, and proved to myself that anything is possible if you set your mind to it.
Oh, and did I mention Kelli and Daniel are incredibly fun, down-to-earth people? Working out alongside them can be really fun. They aren’t afraid to sweat, make mistakes, and get out of breath right along with their viewers.
The What: Blogilates is a (you guessed it) pilates YouTube channel, created by Cassey Ho, that combines pilates with pop music. With over 400 videos (and counting), this Fitness channel has been wildly popular and has helped many people get fit and strong. Take a look at her website here: http://www.blogilates.com/
The Why: In my opinion, pilates is one of the best forms of exercise to increase your core strength and stability. Cassey Ho makes exercise fun (but by no means easy) for her viewers. She has a very peppy personality, and her workouts range from beginner to advanced. She gives very detailed explanations for how to do each exercise, which is very helpful as some of the moves can be a little confusing for beginners.
Note: Pilates exercises can look really easy (especially when Cassey does them), but don’t be fooled. Pilates workouts are some of the most difficult I’ve ever done, and they still challenge me to this day.
The What: BeFit is a channel that offers workout videos from many different sources, including Denise Austen, Jillian Michaels, and Mary Helen Bowers. In addition to workouts, you will also find lots of other health-related stuff on their website (http://www.befit.com/), including recipes, healthy hacks, inspiration, and more.
The Why: I’ll say it again: variety is one of the most important aspects of a good fitness routine, and BeFit certainly offers plenty of variety, both in the types of workouts they upload, and in the trainers they feature. Whatever your current fitness goals are, you will find a BeFit workout to suit your needs. Some of the types of workouts the BeFit channel features include ballet inspired workouts, high intensity interval training, Crossfit, kickboxing, and much more.
