4 Non-Physical Benefits of Getting Fit

Living a fit lifestyle benefits so much more than just your physical health. It has the potential to change your whole mindset. Here are 5 lessons we can learn from getting fit:

To get the benefits, you have to push yourself through pain. There comes a point in every workout where your muscles burn, you’re out of breath, and you just want to quit. Pushing through that pain to finish the workout is what ultimately gives you lasting results. In order to strengthen a muscle, you have to work hard enough to create hundreds of micro-tears in the muscle fibers. When those tiny tears heal, the muscle comes back stronger than before. The same applies to building endurance and losing weight – you have to push past your comfort zone to make any progress.

Perseverance. If you’re like me, it’s easy for you to get excited about starting a new workout plan, but finishing it is another matter. When you lose motivation and aren’t seeing results (yet!), it’s very tempting to quit or do something easier. But when you keep working out every day anyway, you build perseverance, which carries over into other obstacles you might face in your everyday life (e.g. getting through another work day, loving your kids when they are being little brats, following the doctor’s orders, etc.).

Letting go of perfectionism. Getting fit is an individual journey. You have the choice to let go of the notion that you have to reach a level of perfection before you can be happy, or always be disappointed. You have to learn to stop comparing yourself to people you see as being perfect, and instead focus on how much you have improved. No one is perfect, and learning to see the beauty in that is one of the most difficult but rewarding journeys of this life.

Self-confidence. Setting goals and achieving them is one of the best ways to build your confidence. When you commit to getting fit, you get to see yourself improve for the rest of your journey, which is one of the best feelings ever and a great way to build your confidence. Physical fitness also has a huge effect on your mindset, because when you know your body is capable and strong, you start to feel like a capable person in other areas of your life as well.
